Commuter Alert: New Roadworks in Nambour and Rail Upgrades Impact Monday Morning Traffic

Monday Morning Traffic Overview
Good morning, Sunshine Coast commuters. As we begin the final week of Term 1, traffic volumes are expected to be high across the region this Monday, March 30, 2026. With school still in session before the Easter break, major arteries including the Bruce Highway and the Sunshine Motorway are seeing the usual heavy flows. However, several new roadwork projects and ongoing rail infrastructure developments mean you should allow extra travel time today.
Major Roadworks and New Projects
Starting today, a few key local routes will experience changed traffic conditions. The Sunshine Coast Council has confirmed the following works beginning Monday, March 30:
- Nambour (Currie Street): Ancillary works are scheduled to commence today in Division 10. These works are expected to last for three weeks. Motorists should anticipate lane closures and reduced speed limits through the Nambour CBD, particularly during peak morning and afternoon hours.
- Glass House Mountains (Sahara Road): A road resealing project begins tonight in Division 1. While much of this work will occur during evening shifts to minimize disruption, daytime commuters may notice signage and preparation work that could cause minor delays.
- Alexandra Headland (Janet Street): Road rehabilitation works that began earlier this month remain active. Expect continued restrictions for the next week as teams finalize this section.
- Mooloolaba Road: The major intersection upgrade continues. We are seeing partial lane closures and delays in both directions. Construction at this site is slated to continue through mid-2026.
Impacts of the Beerburrum to Nambour Rail Upgrade
Major construction on Stage 1 of the Beerburrum to Nambour (B2N) Rail Upgrade is significantly impacting the southern end of the Coast. Commuters using Steve Irwin Way should prepare for a sustained increase in heavy vehicle movements between Beerburrum and Beerwah. Reduced speed limits and lane shifts remain in place as earthworks and vegetation clearing continue along the rail corridor.
Importantly, Moffatt Road remains closed between Steve Irwin Way and Anderson Road. This closure is part of the essential drainage and rail duplication works and is expected to stay in effect until mid-2027. Detours are clearly marked, but local residents are advised to plan for additional time when navigating the Glass House Mountains area.
Public Transport and Rail Alerts
Translink has issued several minor service alerts for the Sunshine Coast Line today. While trains are running, the following services are experiencing delays:
- The 1:21 PM Gympie North to Central service is delayed by approximately 10 minutes.
- The 2:37 PM Central to Nambour service is delayed by approximately 10 minutes.
- The 3:08 PM Nambour to Central service is currently experiencing delays of up to 20 minutes.
Commuters are also reminded that the 50-cent flat rate fare remains active across the Translink network, providing a cost-effective alternative to driving during these heavy construction periods. Looking ahead, a major track closure is scheduled for the Easter long weekend starting this Friday, April 3, so begin planning your holiday travel early.
