Late-Night Rail Impacts and Active Roadworks: Your Thursday Commute Guide

Commuters across the Sunshine Coast should prepare for a mix of local road rehabilitation projects and significant late-night rail disruptions this Thursday, March 26, 2026. While the morning peak is expected to flow relatively well on major arteries like the Bruce Highway, several suburban routes and the rail network require extra attention.

Public Transport: Thursday Night Rail Closures

Translink has issued a service alert for Thursday, March 26, regarding late-night track closures. Starting this evening, the inner city and inner north lines will be closed to facilitate critical maintenance and project works. This will impact Sunshine Coast commuters returning late from Brisbane, as services on the Sunshine Coast line connect through these affected inner-north stations. Rail replacement buses will be in operation for the final services of the night. Passengers are encouraged to check the journey planner before heading to the station to ensure they have the most current departure times for these alternative services.

Local Roadworks and Delays

Several key local roads are currently undergoing maintenance and upgrades that may cause localized congestion during peak periods. Drivers should be mindful of the following areas:

  • Alexandra Headland: Rehabilitation work continues on Janet Street. This project, which began mid-month, is expected to continue for another week. Expect intermittent lane closures and traffic control presence.
  • Buderim: Road resealing remains active in the Rainforest Sanctuary area. Speed restrictions are in place, and motorists should allow for minor delays when entering or exiting the estate.
  • Little Mountain: Night works are scheduled for Latcham Drive. While most of this work occurs between 6:00 PM and 5:00 AM to minimize impact, residents and early morning commuters may still encounter equipment and temporary road surfaces.
  • Division 3 and 4: Ongoing line marking and surface maintenance are occurring across various suburban roads. While these are mobile works, they can cause brief, unexpected slow-downs.

Major Infrastructure Projects

In addition to local maintenance, two generational projects are entering active phases. Early works for Stage 1 of the Mooloolah River Interchange Upgrade are well underway, with earthworks and civil preparations visible near the interchange. Additionally, geotechnical investigations for "The Wave" (Direct Sunshine Coast Rail) Stage 2 are currently taking place at the future site of Aroona Station. While these works are mostly off-road, increased heavy vehicle movement in the vicinity of the Nicklin Way and the rail corridor should be expected throughout the day.

Motorists are reminded to follow all posted signage and instructions from traffic controllers to ensure the safety of both road users and construction crews.
