Major Rail Disruptions and Local Roadworks Impact Tuesday Commute

Sunshine Coast commuters should prepare for significant travel changes today, Tuesday, 7 April 2026. A combination of scheduled rail network transformations and essential local road maintenance is expected to affect travel times across the region throughout the morning and afternoon peaks. Whether you are heading to Brisbane or navigating local arterial roads, planning ahead and allowing extra travel time is critical today.

Rail Network: Buses Replacing Trains

The most substantial impact today is on the Sunshine Coast rail line. As part of a major rail network upgrade involving the Beerburrum to Nambour Rail Upgrade Stage 1 and the European Train Control System rollout, Translink has confirmed that significant track closures are in effect. Starting from the first service today, Tuesday, 7 April, buses will replace all train services between Gympie North and Caboolture stations.

  • Buses will operate as both express and all-stops services to assist passengers in reaching their destinations.
  • Commuters should allow for significantly longer journey times, with some trips expected to take at least 45 minutes longer than a standard rail journey.
  • Major timetable changes are also in effect for the connecting Caboolture and Redcliffe Peninsula lines, which will likely impact those transferring for onward travel toward the Brisbane CBD.

Local Roadworks and Closures

In addition to the rail disruptions, several key local roads are currently undergoing maintenance or upgrades that will affect traffic flow today:

  • Bli Bli: Asphalt resurfacing continues on David Low Way. While much of the heavy work is conducted at night, motorists should remain alert for temporary lane closures and detours near the Maroochy River Bridge and the Bli Bli Road roundabout.
  • Mooloolaba: Ongoing intersection upgrades on Mooloolaba Road continue to cause partial lane closures. Expect minor delays during peak hours as traffic management remains active between Buderim and Mooloolaba.
  • Maleny: Bunya Street is currently in the middle of a three-week road maintenance program. Drivers should expect localized delays and are urged to follow all roadside signage and traffic controller directions.
  • Nambour: Ancillary works on Currie Street are active today, which may impact parking availability and slow traffic flow within the town center.

Regional Arteries and Highway Updates

Motorists using Steve Irwin Way between Beerburrum and Beerwah should exercise additional caution this morning. Increased worker vehicle movements and heavy machinery are present due to the ongoing Rail Upgrade project. While the road remains open, speed reductions and intermittent delays are highly likely. Furthermore, Moffat Road in the Glass House Mountains remains closed to through traffic between Steve Irwin Way and Anderson Road, with clearly marked detours in place for local residents.

On the Bruce Highway, safety works continue north of Gympie at Bauple. While the highway is largely free-flowing, the presence of road widening activities and pavement strengthening may cause minor bunching of traffic. Commuters are advised to stay updated via local radio for any cleared incidents that may occur during the morning rush.
