Major Rail Shutdown for Easter Weekend

Commuters and holiday travelers should prepare for significant disruptions today as Translink begins its major Easter weekend track closure. Starting from the first service this morning, Friday, April 3, the Sunshine Coast line is suspended. Buses will replace trains in both directions between Gympie North and Caboolture stations. If you are heading toward Brisbane, please allow for significantly longer travel times as rail-replacement buses are subject to local road conditions and traffic congestion. Most services will take significantly longer than the standard rail schedule.

Key Road Closures and Long-Term Detours

Several major road projects are impacting traffic flow across the region today. Motorists are advised to plan their routes in advance to avoid the most heavily affected areas:

  • Glass House Mountains: Moffatt Road remains closed to all through traffic between Steve Irwin Way and Anderson Road. Local detours are in place, but motorists should expect delays when navigating the intersection with Steve Irwin Way.
  • Dicky Beach: Cooroy Street is closed between Coochin Street and Beerburrum Street as part of an ongoing intersection upgrade. Traffic is being diverted via Coonowrin Street and Beerburrum Street.
  • Maroochydore: The northbound section of First Avenue between Aerodrome Road and the Esplanade remains closed for a long-term upgrade. Detours are active via Aerodrome Road and Second Avenue.

Active Roadworks and Maintenance Sites

Motorists should exercise caution and expect reduced speed limits at the following locations today:

  • Steve Irwin Way (Beerburrum to Beerwah): Construction for the Beerburrum to Nambour Rail Upgrade Stage 1 is in high gear. Expect increased heavy vehicle movements and changed traffic conditions, particularly between Beerburrum and Beerwah.
  • Nambour: Ancillary works continue on Currie Street. While the road remains open, expect minor delays and localized traffic management during business hours.
  • Woombye: Maintenance on the Blackall Range Road Bridge started yesterday and continues today, which may cause short delays for commuters heading toward the hinterland.
  • Bli Bli: Following overnight asphalt resurfacing on David Low Way near the Maroochy River Bridge, some minor lane restrictions may persist during the early morning commute.

Public Transport and Bus Services

In addition to the rail shutdown, local bus users in Bokarina should note that today is the final day of the scheduled bus stop closures on Dune Vista Drive near Beachcomber Court. Routes 5631 and 5704 are continuing their detours via Magnolia and Dahlia Streets. Additionally, minor delays of up to 15 minutes are expected across the CDC Sunshine Coast network due to increased holiday traffic and heavy passenger loading as the school holiday period begins.
