Significant Disruptions Expected for Triathlon Weekend

Sunshine Coast residents and commuters are advised to plan for significant travel delays this Saturday, 28 March 2026. The region faces a combination of major event road closures, rail maintenance, and ongoing infrastructure projects that will affect both local thoroughfares and major arteries.

Mooloolaba Triathlon Road Closures

The 34th annual Mooloolaba Triathlon is the primary driver of road disruptions today. As the Sprint Triathlon takes place, several key routes in Mooloolaba and Alexandra Headland will be inaccessible to vehicles. Expect heavy congestion and restricted access on the following roads:

  • Mooloolaba Esplanade: Closed between River Esplanade and Buderim Avenue until approximately 2:45 PM.
  • Buderim Avenue: Restricted access between Mooloolaba Esplanade and the Sunshine Motorway.
  • Alexandra Parade: Impacted between Buderim Avenue and Sixth Avenue.
  • Local Streets: Parkyn Parade, Brisbane Road, and First Avenue will experience various closures and detours to accommodate the run and cycle legs of the event.

Motorists are encouraged to use the green-marked advised routes and allow an additional 30 to 45 minutes for travel through the central coast corridor.

Public Transport: Rail Track Closures

Commuters relying on the Sunshine Coast Line should be aware of a scheduled weekend track closure starting today, Saturday 28 March. Maintenance works on the inner-city and Ferny Grove sections of the network will ripple through the schedule, leading to significant timetable changes. TransLink has advised that rail replacement buses will be in operation for affected segments. Passengers are urged to check the journey planner before heading to the station, as travel times may be doubled.

Bruce Highway and Steve Irwin Way Upgrades

Major infrastructure work continues on the Beerburrum to Nambour Rail Upgrade (Stage 1). Commuters traveling near Beerwah should expect changed traffic conditions and increased heavy vehicle movements on Steve Irwin Way. Standard day works are active from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM. While the Bruce Highway remains open, those merging near the Gateway Motorway interchange may encounter slowing as preliminary site investigations for the Stage 1 upgrade continue.

Local Council Roadworks

In addition to major projects, several local rehabilitation works remain active:

  • Alexandra Headland: Road rehabilitation on Janet Street continues, with lane reductions in place.
  • Aroona: Pathway renewals at Ocean Ridge Park may cause minor delays for pedestrians and local traffic.
  • Caloundra: Early works for the Caloundra Transport Corridor Upgrade are ongoing between Nicklin Way and Third Avenue.

Drivers are reminded to slow down and follow all directions from traffic controllers to ensure the safety of event participants and road workers.
