A Region on the Rise: Your Thursday Morning Briefing

Good morning, Sunshine Coast. As we settle into the final days of January, the mood across our region is one of focused ambition. From the coastal strip to the hinterland, there is a clear sense that we are entering what Mayor Rosanna Natoli describes as a "transformative decade." With the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games appearing on the horizon, the talk of the town has shifted toward the critical infrastructure required to support our rapidly growing population.

The Key Talking Point: Securing Our Future

This morning, the primary topic of conversation is the Sunshine Coast’s strategic pitch for the 2026–27 Federal Budget. Mayor Rosanna Natoli recently hosted Senator Corinne Mulholland on a regional tour to showcase the projects that will define our livability for years to come. Central to these discussions is the $2.75 billion commitment for Stage 1 of the Direct Sunshine Coast Rail Line, a project that remains the region's highest transport priority.

Beyond rail, the Council is advocating for significant federal investment in several key areas:

  • A $162 million Regional Indoor Community Sports Centre designed to meet the soaring demand for local sports and event spaces.
  • Greater support for housing and homelessness initiatives as the region faces ongoing supply pressures.
  • Funding for coastal protection to safeguard our iconic beaches and community assets from the impacts of severe weather.

Parallel to these government efforts, private development continues to move quickly. A new 103-lot residential subdivision has just been proposed for Burnside, highlighting the continued expansion of our suburban footprint to accommodate new residents.

Feel-Good Story: Local Heroes and Hatchlings

While infrastructure dominates the headlines, the heart of the Coast is found in its people. This morning, we highlight the inspiring work of local nominee Imogene Nguyen. At just 28 years old, Imogene has spent years supporting vulnerable individuals at The Shack Community Centre in Nambour. Her leadership of the "Trees of Hope" Christmas Appeal has helped more than 1,600 families annually, proving that the Sunshine Coast’s spirit of generosity is as strong as ever.

Our environment is also providing reason to celebrate. We are currently in the peak of the turtle nesting and hatching season. Local volunteers are hard at work with the "Clean-up for the Hatchlings" initiative, ensuring our beaches remain pristine so the newest residents of our biosphere can make their way safely to the ocean. It is a timely reminder of the unique natural world we are all tasked with protecting.

Today’s Weather and Conditions

Residents can expect a mild but humid Thursday. Temperatures are forecast to reach a comfortable maximum of 25°C, providing a slight reprieve from the more intense summer heat earlier in the week. While the morning may see some patchy rain or heavy cloud cover, conditions are expected to clear for a sunnier afternoon. However, do not let the clouds fool you; the UV index is forecast to hit an "extreme" level of 12. If you are heading to the beach, the sea temperature is a near-perfect 26°C, but sun protection is essential.
