Commuter Alert: Reduced Speed Limits on Bruce Highway and Rail Upgrade Delays

Morning Commute Update for Tuesday, February 10, 2026
Good morning, Sunshine Coast. As we head into the Tuesday morning commute, motorists should be prepared for several ongoing traffic adjustments and major roadwork projects affecting our region's key transport corridors. Whether you are heading south toward Brisbane or moving between coastal hubs, please factor extra travel time into your journey today.
Bruce Highway Speed Restrictions at Tanawha
The most significant notice for long-distance commuters remains the southbound stretch of the Bruce Highway at Tanawha. Following a heavy vehicle incident at the Ilkley Road overpass earlier this month, the Department of Transport and Main Roads has implemented a mandatory speed reduction. Southbound traffic is restricted to 60km/h in the vicinity of the overpass. While all lanes have been reopened, the bridge itself remains temporarily wrapped and closed to cross-traffic for structural assessments. These speed restrictions are expected to remain in place through March, so please remain vigilant and expect minor merging delays during peak hour.
Major Roadworks and Rail Upgrades
Work is progressing on the Beerburrum to Nambour Rail Upgrade (Stage 1), which continues to impact Steve Irwin Way. Commuters traveling between Beerburrum and Beerwah should expect increased worker vehicle movements and changed traffic conditions between Endeavour Road and Roys Road. Motorists are advised to follow all directional signage and expect intermittent delays during active construction hours.
Other notable roadworks include:
- Mooloolaba Road, Buderim: Ongoing intersection upgrades near Mooloolaba are causing partial lane closures. While the bulk of heavy work is scheduled for night hours (7:00 pm to 6:00 am), daytime commuters may still encounter shifted lanes and a reduced speed environment.
- Moffat Road, Glass House Mountains: A total road closure remains in effect on Moffat Road between Steve Irwin Way and Anderson Road. Local traffic is encouraged to follow the clearly marked detours.
- Tanawha and Forest Glen: Minor service road adjustments continue near the Maroochydore Road and Mons Road interchanges as final drainage works are completed.
Public Transport and Rail Services
Translink reports that the Sunshine Coast rail line is currently operating on its regular weekday schedule. There are no major track closures reported for today; however, commuters using connecting bus services in the hinterland should account for minor delays caused by the Steve Irwin Way roadworks. We recommend checking the Translink journey planner for real-time updates before departing.
Drive safely and stay tuned for further updates throughout the day.
