Morning Commute Overview

Sunshine Coast commuters heading out this Monday, February 2, 2026, should prepare for several major roadwork projects and changed traffic conditions that may impact travel times. While the main Bruce Highway is currently flowing without significant incident, major arterial roads and local connections are seeing increased activity due to ongoing infrastructure upgrades.

Mooloolah River Interchange and Mooloolaba Road

The Mooloolah River Interchange Upgrade (MRIU) has entered an intensive phase. Motorists and active transport users are advised that the Seriata Way and Incana Court networks are now closed to facilitate construction works. Pedestrians and cyclists are required to use a significantly longer detour via Lady Musgrave Drive and Amarina Avenue. Additionally, work continues on the Mooloolaba Road intersection upgrade near Buderim. While the majority of these works are scheduled for night shifts (7:00 PM to 6:00 AM), partial lane closures may remain in place during the day, and reduced speed limits are in effect. Commuters should allow at least an extra 10 minutes when traveling through this corridor.

Steve Irwin Way and Rail Upgrade Impacts

Motorists traveling between Beerburrum and Beerwah on Steve Irwin Way can expect delays throughout the day. The Beerburrum to Nambour Rail Upgrade (Stage 1) is currently seeing increased heavy vehicle movements and worker activity on the road network. Standard day works are active from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM, impacting traffic between Endeavour Road and Roys Road. Traffic management and controllers are on-site to assist with flow, but congestion is likely during peak school and work runs.

Local Road Closures and Resealing

  • Glass House Mountains: Moffatt Road remains closed to through traffic between Steve Irwin Way and Anderson Road. Local detours are signed and expected to remain in place for the foreseeable future.
  • Peachester: Road resealing continues on River Road. This project is expected to continue throughout this week with lane reductions in place. Drivers are urged to follow all traffic directions and watch for workers in the area.
  • Caloundra: Motorists have reported flashing yellow lights at the intersection of Bowman Road, Regent Street, and Arthur Street. While no major delays are expected from this, extra caution is advised when navigating the intersection.

Public Transport Update

The Sunshine Coast train line has returned to its regular weekday schedule following planned track maintenance over the weekend. No major service disruptions are reported for the Monday morning peak. However, passengers in Mooloolaba should remember that the temporary bus stop closure on Brisbane Road remains in effect due to ongoing construction. Passengers are encouraged to check the Translink app for real-time updates before beginning their journey.

Commuters are reminded to stay alert, obey all temporary speed signs, and plan their travel to accommodate these unavoidable infrastructure improvements.
