Commuter Overview for Thursday, 19 March

Sunshine Coast commuters should prepare for a mix of scheduled road maintenance and ongoing infrastructure projects this Thursday. While major highway stretches remain largely open, residents in Buderim, Alexandra Headland, and Maroochydore will face several local detours and speed restrictions. Public transport users should also note specific bus stop closures affecting routes in the coastal corridor between Bokarina and Dicky Beach.

Major Arteries and Highway Updates

Motorists using Steve Irwin Way between Beerburrum and Beerwah are advised to stay alert for changed traffic conditions. As part of the Beerburrum to Nambour Rail Upgrade Stage 1, construction activities are resulting in increased worker vehicle movements and occasional lane narrowing. While much of the intensive work is scheduled for night hours (typically 7:00 pm to 5:00 am), daytime commuters may still experience minor delays due to reduced speed limits in active zones to ensure site safety.

On the Bruce Highway, traffic is flowing relatively well; however, freight volumes remain high. Commuters travelling between the Steve Irwin Way exit (163) and Caloundra Road should be aware of ongoing planning studies in the area. While no major lane closures are scheduled for the daylight hours of March 19, heavy congestion is anticipated during the morning and afternoon peaks near the Sunshine Motorway merge.

Local Roadworks and Closures

Several local road improvement projects are active today, requiring motorists to plan for extra travel time:

  • Buderim: Essential road resealing projects continue on Burnett Lane and in the Rainforest Sanctuary area. These works may cause temporary delays and periodic single-lane traffic flow.
  • Alexandra Headland: Road rehabilitation on Janet Street is currently underway. Expect traffic management personnel on-site between 7:00 am and 5:00 pm, with partial closures affecting local access.
  • Maroochydore: The northbound section of First Avenue, between Aerodrome Road and the Esplanade, remains closed as part of a long-term streetscape upgrade. Northbound traffic is being detoured via Second Avenue.
  • Dicky Beach: Cooroy Street is closed to through traffic between Coochin Street and Beerburrum Street for intersection and pedestrian safety improvements.

Public Transport and Bus Alerts

The Sunshine Coast rail line is operating on a normal schedule following the completion of earlier trackwork between Landsborough and Caboolture. However, bus commuters should be aware of the following service adjustments:

  • Bokarina: Two bus stops on Dune Vista Drive near Beachcomber Court are closed until the end of the month. Routes 5631 and 5704 are currently detouring via Magnolia Street and Camelia Street.
  • Dicky Beach: Due to the ongoing Cooroy Street closure, routes 5541, 5551, 5702, and 5717 are diverted. Passengers are redirected to temporary stops located on Beerburrum Street.

Commuters are encouraged to allow an additional 10 to 15 minutes for journeys in these affected suburbs to account for detour-related traffic and altered stop locations.
