Significant Rail Disruptions

Commuters and weekend travelers should be prepared for major disruptions to the rail network today, Sunday, 1 February 2026. A scheduled weekend track closure is currently in effect for the Sunshine Coast, Caboolture, Redcliffe Peninsula, and Shorncliffe lines. Translink has confirmed that trains are only operating between Gympie North or Caboolture and Northgate station. Passengers heading into the Brisbane CBD must transfer to rail replacement bus services at Northgate. Those traveling toward the airport should catch the Sunshine Coast line to Eagle Junction and connect with the Airport line from there. Regular rail services are expected to resume from the first service tomorrow morning.

Motorway and Arterial Road Updates

Motorists using the Sunshine Motorway and Caloundra Road should factor in additional travel time due to several active work zones. Delays are expected on the Sunshine Motorway westbound between Mountain Creek and Sippy Downs. Similar conditions are reported eastbound after the Kawana Way exit. These delays are partly attributed to the ongoing early works for the Mooloolah River Interchange Upgrade (MRIU), which has seen significant vegetation clearing and geotechnical investigations recently ramped up around Mooloolaba and Mountain Creek.

In Meridan Plains, eastbound traffic on Caloundra Road is experiencing congestion on the approach to the Kawana Way Link Road. Further south, Moffatt Road in the Glass House Mountains remains closed to through traffic between Steve Irwin Way and Anderson Road. This closure is part of a long-term project and is expected to remain in place well into next year. Drivers are advised to use alternative routes such as Johnston Road where possible.

Local Roadworks and Infrastructure Projects

Today marks the commencement of two significant local infrastructure projects. In Alexandra Headland, work begins today on the Alex Bluff Foreshore Park coastal pathway upgrade. This six-month project will renew and widen the existing path to a 3.5-metre shared pathway. While the work is primarily off-road, residents should be mindful of construction vehicles near the foreshore. Similarly, construction starts today on a new 72-metre pathway along Princess Drive in Bli Bli, which is expected to take approximately two weeks to complete.

Maintenance and road resurfacing efforts are also active in the following areas:

  • Peachester: River Road is undergoing resealing with lane reductions and traffic control in place.
  • Aroona: Final stages of road resealing continue on Beerburrum Street.
  • Palmwoods: Maintenance works are scheduled for Cardinal Court and Palmwoods School Road.

Commuter Advice

With several projects starting today and the rail network under maintenance, residents are encouraged to check the Translink journey planner before departing. Please obey all temporary speed limits and follow the directions of traffic controllers in work zones to ensure the safety of both motorists and road crews. Allow at least 20 to 30 minutes of extra travel time if your journey involves the Sunshine Motorway or the rail-to-bus transfer at Northgate.
