Community Alert: National Ride2School Day

Friday, 20 March 2026, marks National Ride2School Day across the Sunshine Coast. Council is encouraging students and families to kick-start healthy habits by choosing active transport for the school commute. Whether it is riding, walking, scooting, or skating, residents are reminded to stay mindful of increased pedestrian and bicycle activity around school zones throughout the morning and afternoon peaks. Drivers should exercise extra caution and adhere strictly to school zone speed limits to ensure the safety of all participants.

Public Health Notice: Measles Alert

Queensland Health has issued a public health alert following confirmed measles cases and identified exposure sites within the Sunshine Coast region. Residents who have visited high-traffic areas, including the Sunshine Coast University Hospital emergency department during recent exposure windows, are urged to monitor for symptoms. Early signs of measles include fever, tiredness, a runny nose, and a moist cough, followed by a blotchy red rash. Authorities recommend checking vaccination records; individuals born in or after 1966 who have not received two doses of the MMR vaccine are encouraged to contact their GP. If symptoms develop, please phone ahead before visiting a medical facility to prevent further transmission.

Roadworks and Traffic Disruptions

Several significant road rehabilitation and maintenance projects are active this Friday, which may result in delays or detours:

  • Alexandra Headland: Rehabilitation works continue on Janet Street. Expect changed traffic conditions and restricted vehicle movement as part of a three-week project.
  • Buderim: Multiple road resealing projects are underway at Cumberland Way, Burnett Lane, and Rainforest Sanctuary. Local access will be maintained, but motorists should plan for minor delays.
  • Steve Irwin Way: Ongoing rail upgrade works between Beerburrum and Beerwah continue to impact traffic. Reduced speed limits and increased heavy vehicle movements are expected between 6:00 am and 6:00 pm.

Park and Pathway Upgrades

Maintenance and infrastructure improvements are currently active at the following locations:

  • Aroona: A pathway renewal project at Ocean Ridge Park is in progress. Sections of the existing footpath may be closed to the public during construction.
  • Alexandra Headland: The Alex Bluff Foreshore Park coastal pathway upgrade remains active. The path is being widened to improve safety for walkers and runners; please follow all posted detour signage.
  • Battery Hill: Demolition works for new stormwater infrastructure are occurring at Careen, Elinya, and Buderim Streets. Residents may notice increased noise and dust in the vicinity.

Community Grants and Engagement

Council reminds local creatives that applications for the Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) grants are currently open. These grants support professional artists and arts workers in delivering projects that benefit the region. Additionally, the Sunshine Coast Citizens’ Panel is continuing its sessions to help shape the 2032 Games legacy; residents are encouraged to stay informed via official council updates regarding future community feedback opportunities.
