Sunshine Coast Traffic and Commute Update

Commuters across the Sunshine Coast should prepare for a busy Monday morning on March 9, 2026, as several major infrastructure projects reach critical phases. Heavy traffic is expected on the primary north-south arteries, particularly heading southbound toward Brisbane and into the Maroochydore CBD between 6:30 AM and 8:30 AM.

Major Motorway Disruptions

The Bruce Highway remains a primary focus for delays this morning. Motorists traveling between Caloundra Road and the Sunshine Motorway (CR2SM) will encounter ongoing lane reconfigurations and reduced speed limits. While night works have concluded for the weekend, temporary safety barriers remain in place, contributing to merging delays at the key interchanges.

Further north, early works for the Mooloolah River Interchange (MRI) project are active near Mountain Creek and Sippy Downs. Drivers should expect increased heavy vehicle movements and potential short-term lane closures as site preparation and geotechnical investigations continue. This area is a known bottleneck during the morning peak, and travel times may increase by up to 15 minutes.

Beerburrum to Nambour (B2N) Rail Impacts

Significant disruptions continue along the rail corridor, particularly affecting those using Steve Irwin Way. As part of the Stage 1 major rail works, motorists between Beerburrum and Beerwah will notice sustained heavy vehicle traffic and lane shifts. Key local closures to note for this morning include:

  • Burgess Street: The rail overpass construction continues with permanent detours in place for the next several months.
  • Moffatt Road: Remains closed near Beerburrum for major drainage and earthworks.
  • Glass House Mountains: The southern commuter car park at Bruce Parade is closed, with passengers redirected to alternative parking areas.

Public Transport and Bus Detours

Starting today, Monday, March 9, passengers in Bokarina should be aware of new service disruptions. Two bus stops on Dune Vista Drive near Beachcomber Court have been closed for construction. Affected routes, including the 5631 and 5704, will be diverted via Magnolia, Camelia, and Honeysuckle streets. Additionally, bus stop closures remain in effect at Dicky Beach on Cooroy Street, with detours directed toward Beerburrum Street.

Local Road Resealing

Council road rehabilitation projects are scheduled for several residential and connector streets today. Expect minor delays and localized traffic control in the following areas:

  • Warana: Resealing works on Mulgani Street.
  • Buddina: Potential delays on Iluka Avenue and Karalise Court.
  • Maroochydore: Maintenance crews are active on Waterford Court and Plymouth Quay.

Commuters are encouraged to allow extra travel time and follow all posted speed reductions to ensure the safety of road workers and fellow motorists.
