Lane Closures on Bruce Highway and Local Detours Impact Friday Commute

Morning Commute Overview

Good morning, Sunshine Coast. For Friday, 6 March 2026, commuters should prepare for a mix of ongoing major highway upgrades and several specific local road closures that will impact travel times throughout the day. While no major unplanned incidents were reported in the early hours, heavy congestion is expected during the usual peak windows, particularly on the Bruce Highway and the Sunshine Motorway.

Major Arterial & Highway Updates

The Bruce Highway remains the primary area for potential delays today. Ongoing work for the major upgrade between Caloundra Road and the Sunshine Motorway continues to cause friction. Motorists should expect reduced speed limits and intermittent lane closures throughout this work zone. Southbound traffic is forecast to be at its heaviest between 6:30 AM and 8:30 AM, while the northbound crawl is expected to peak from 3:30 PM to 5:30 PM.

For those travelling through the hinterland, the Beerburrum to Nambour Rail Upgrade Stage 1 is resulting in increased worker vehicle movements on Steve Irwin Way. Drivers should expect changed traffic conditions between Beerburrum and Beerwah, with standard day works occurring from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Please allow an additional 10 to 15 minutes if you are using this route as your primary connection today.

Local Road Closures & Work Zones

  • Sunrise Beach: The Sunshine Creek Landslide Stabilisation Project is in active construction. Residents and visitors should expect a road closure near the pathway entrance at Ross Crescent and Adams Street. Traffic controllers are on-site between 6:00 AM and 6:00 PM to manage local access.
  • Maroochydore: First Avenue remains closed to northbound traffic between Aerodrome Road and the Esplanade. A detour is in place via Aerodrome Road and Second Avenue. This is part of a long-term infrastructure project and will impact access to the Esplanade throughout the day.
  • Dicky Beach: Cooroy Street is closed to all through traffic between Coochin Street and Beerburrum Street. Commuters are advised to utilize the detour via Coonowrin Street. These works are scheduled to continue through April 2026.

Public Transport & Bus Disruptions

Public transport users are reminded that the 50-cent flat rate fare remains in effect for all Translink services. However, several bus routes are currently operating on detours due to local roadworks:

  • Routes 5601, 5719, and 5728: These services are detouring via Aerodrome Road due to the First Avenue closure in Maroochydore.
  • Routes 5541, 5551, 5702, and 5717: Services in the Dicky Beach area are detouring via Coonowrin Street, with bus stops on Cooroy Street currently closed to the public.
  • School Services: CDC Queensland has advised that school bus routes in the southern corridor may experience minor delays due to the high volume of construction traffic on Steve Irwin Way.

Commuters are encouraged to plan their journeys ahead of time and check official transport apps for real-time updates on any emerging incidents throughout the Friday afternoon peak.
