Mooloolaba Triathlon Closures and Flood Alerts Impact Friday Commute

Significant Disruptions Expected for Friday Commuters

Commuters across the Sunshine Coast should prepare for a complex Friday on the roads this March 13, 2026. A combination of the 34th annual Mooloolaba Triathlon festival preparations and ongoing emergency flood warnings following recent severe weather is expected to create significant delays and altered traffic conditions throughout the day.

Mooloolaba Triathlon Road Closures

The Mooloolaba Triathlon begins its weekend of events with several key closures starting today. Residents and visitors in the Mooloolaba area should note the following impacts:

  • Beach Terrace & Car Park: Full closure from 4:30 am until 7:00 pm.
  • Brisbane Road: Between First Avenue and Mooloolaba Esplanade, closures will be in effect from 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm.
  • Mooloolaba Esplanade: Between Brisbane Road and Venning Street, closures will occur from 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm.

Motorists are advised to avoid the Mooloolaba CBD during these windows or utilize the Parkyn Parade Rotary car park, though availability will be limited as the event festival grounds expand.

Weather and Flood Warnings

Emergency authorities have issued alerts for several parts of the region following a major weather system. Minor to moderate flooding is currently possible across the hinterland and coastal catchments. Some local schools have announced closures for Friday, March 13, due to localized flooding and safety concerns. Drivers are reminded: if it’s flooded, forget it. Check your local disaster dashboard for specific road-by-road flooding status before departing.

Major Arterial Roadworks

Beyond event-specific closures, major infrastructure projects continue to affect travel times on the Coast’s primary arteries:

  • Steve Irwin Way: Construction for the Beerburrum to Nambour Rail Upgrade Stage 1 is active between Beerburrum and Beerwah. Expect heavy vehicle movements and delays between 6:00 am and 6:00 pm.
  • Bruce Highway (M1): Ongoing lane closures and reduced speed limits remain in place for the upgrade segment between Caloundra Road and the Sunshine Motorway. Southbound delays are expected to peak between 6:30 am and 8:30 am.
  • Nambour: Active roadworks are causing lane blockages and delays across multiple directions through March 17.

Public Transport Update

Translink confirms that the Sunshine Coast Line is operating on a normal Friday schedule today. However, commuters should be aware that a major weekday track closure is scheduled to begin this coming Monday, March 16. Local bus services in Mooloolaba may experience minor diversions today due to the triathlon setup on Brisbane Road; please check the Translink app for real-time stop updates.
