Public Health Alert: Measles Exposure Sites

Queensland Health has issued a critical health alert following confirmed measles cases with exposure sites identified across the Sunshine Coast region. Residents who visited the following locations during the specified times in mid-to-late February are urged to remain vigilant and monitor for symptoms through the beginning of March:

  • Sunshine Coast University Hospital Emergency Department
  • SCUH Child and Adolescent Ward
  • SCUH Paediatric Critical Care Unit

Early symptoms include fever, tiredness, a runny nose, and a moist cough, followed by a blotchy red rash that typically begins on the face. Health authorities advise that anyone exhibiting symptoms should phone their General Practitioner or 13 HEALTH before visiting a clinic to prevent further transmission. Vaccination remains the most effective defense, and those born in or after 1966 are encouraged to verify their immunization status to ensure they have received two doses of the MMR vaccine.

Roadwork and Infrastructure Updates

Several major road projects and maintenance activities are active across the Sunshine Coast and Noosa shires. Motorists should plan for the following disruptions this Sunday:

  • Steve Irwin Way Rail Upgrade: Significant construction continues as part of the Beerburrum to Nambour Rail Upgrade (Stage 1). While standard day works occur Monday through Saturday, night works are scheduled to resume this evening, Sunday, 1 March, starting at 7:00 PM. Expect reduced speed limits and increased worker vehicle movements.
  • Road Resealing Program: Ongoing maintenance continues in Flaxton on Ensbey Road and across several Buderim streets, including Honeyeater Close, Keppel Lane, and Bluebush Avenue. While heavy machinery is generally stationary on Sundays, residents should be aware of changed traffic conditions and localized parking restrictions.
  • Noosa Infrastructure: This week marks the commencement of reconstruction works to stabilise the Sunshine Creek embankment at Sunrise Beach. Additionally, the Bridge Street Pathway project in Cooran is scheduled to begin, which will involve temporary pedestrian detours over the next four weeks.

Facility Closures and Refurbishments

Public amenities and recreational facilities are currently undergoing scheduled maintenance to improve community safety and accessibility:

  • Tewantin Amenities: The public restrooms on Moorindil Street remain closed as part of a four-week refurbishment project. Residents and visitors are encouraged to use alternative facilities located at nearby regional parklands.
  • Mooloolaba Foreshore: The ongoing revitalisation project continues to impact sections of the beachfront parkland. While beach access remains open, some pathways and community facilities near the foreshore are currently restricted for construction safety.
  • Sports Field Usage: Sunshine Coast Council reminds the community that several sporting fields remain under maintenance. Signage at individual venues indicates current field status; the public is reminded that using closed fields is prohibited to prevent turf damage.

Community Grants and Youth Programs

Council is currently inviting local residents and organisations to participate in several regional initiatives:

  • Community Project Grants: Noosa Council’s grant program is open for applications from not-for-profit organisations. Funding is available for projects that strengthen local connectivity and community support, with applications closing on 23 March.
  • Mayor’s Telstra Innovation Series: Local students in Year 8 and above are invited to explore leadership opportunities through the 2026 Masterclass Series. Information regarding registration for upcoming workshops is now available through official council channels.
